Civil engineering is a discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment such as roads, bridges, canals, dams and buildings. Civil engineering is the oldest engineering discipline after military engineering, and it was defined to distinguish non-military engineering from military engineering. It is traditionally broken into several sub-disciplines including environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, geophysics, geodesy, control engineering, structural engineering, biomechanics, nanotechnology, transportation engineering, earth science, atmospheric sciences, forensic engineering, municipal or urban engineering, water resources engineering, materials engineering, coastal engineering, surveying and construction engineering. Civil engineering takes place on all levels: in the public sector from municipal through to national governments, and in the private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies.
The civil engineering course was started in the year 2012−13 with an intake of 60 students, and has since grown into a full-fledged department possessing international standards in all areas of civil engineering. The faculty members are well qualified and experienced and have got training from reputed institutions.
Students of the department are exposed to core civil engineering subjects with practical knowledge through various laboratory courses. Students are also made aware of the latest developments in the industry through guest lectures and seminars by eminent technocrats and academicians. The department and students enjoy strong support from the companies of the Chettinad Group like Chettinad Cements and Chettinad Builders. The students are placed in core civil engineering companies every year.
